Road trip around Europe (Madrid – Ipswich)

As some of you know, next week I’ll take part in an adventure with my brother (Roberto), a friend (David) and of course my car (Fiesta). This road trip is because I wanted to have my car in winter here in Ipswich because at 16:30 is dark and coming by bike from work is not the nicest pleasure ever, but also because it is time to start running again and join a club here in England.
Any way, let’s back to the trip. We’ll depart from Madrid on the 5th of November of 2008, it has to be early in the morning, around 8:00/9:00 because this first stage will go from Madrid to Bourg in France stopping in “Burgos”, San Sebastian, where we will have lunch trying the famous tapas of the city in order to continue afterwards all the way to Bordeaux crossing the border in Irun. Once in France we will go next to the coast for a few kilometres, but I guess that the best landscapes we are going to find will be in the National Park of Les Landes, park that we cross from south-west to north. We will continue a bit further from Bordeaux to arrive to Bourg where we will stay for the first night.
What’s going on in the second day? Ok in this day, the route is not that long, which gives us a bigger range in the timetable, however the problem is the visit to a Chateau and we depend here of the opening timetable. So the day will end in an small village close to Blois, which is in the Chateau’s zone, monsieur Brossard is the one that is going to choose the Chateau that we are going to visit (he is the French in this trip, so he is the expert in this kind of issues).
Paris
The shortest driving day is the third one (Friday), day that we reach the city of love, Paris, where we are going to stay in a hotel close to the centre of this city and where we are going to meet people that have been living in Ipswich at some point in the past and that are now living there. Hopefully we will meet all of them and we go out for dinner and drinks that night, remembering the times when we were here in lovely Ipswich. During this day in Paris we want to visit the city because not David, but my brother and me we stayed there when we were kids and since then only me has gone there but for work so it is going to be nice to remember the city with the Champs Elysees, the Eifel Tower and Notre Dame.
The following day drives us out of France for first day in this trip and we end up in Bruges, an old town in Belgium, but before of this we have a technical stop in Mons to pick Dani up and take him with us this day where a few of the Ipswich people is going to Bruges as well in order to know the town, visiting as well the Béguinage in the town centre of Bruges, as well we’ll have a fun and funny night there where we will have to try some of this Belgium beers.
We have reached the last day of our trip. Day, Sunday, elected to arrive home, lovely Ipswich. In this day we have to leave Bruges early as well because we have to drive all the way to Holland to catch the ferry from Hoek Van Holland (next to Rotterdam) and coming all the way to Harwich (do you remember this David 
). 6 hours by ferry with the car inside the boat and showing the sunshine at the beginning of the North Sea. Then from Harwich to Ipswich I’ll be the driver because I want to know from the very beginning in the UK the feeling of drive in the other side of the road with my “cuca”.
So this is a brief description of the road trip/holidays through west Europe starting in the “Sun” and finishing in the “Cloud”.

FKFT conference
Last week it took place in Barcelona (Spain) the 1st Free Knowledge Free Technology (FKFT) conference, where around 200 people involved in FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) and teaching were talking about how FLOSS can come into the classrooms in all the levels, from the school to the university.
In the 3 days that the conference consisted, we had so many different speeches in some others topics. From presentations of official Libre software masters to the rights in of the content in media types now at days. I was there because I am part of the team in NetGenners, one of the projects related with this issue that we were discussing there.
What we could get from there is that the use of FLOSS in the teaching, mostly in the high level (university and masters) is growing and growing because of his facility to be used and studied, due to you have everything online to study it and the added value of a community, either big or small, behind each project. That is one of the reasons that make teachers to introduce this type of software (or other projects not software related such as documentation, …) into the classrooms. And I’m not only talking about university students, also this type of projects is used to continue with the formation of some other professionals that want to improve their knowledge in this technology because they need it or because they like it.
Also the meeting was good to know new people interested in open new projects together big or small collaborations that helps the community to be more active and create a bigger social network working together in different topics of with the same base, the FLOSS in the teaching.
Semana Santa en CdT
Esta semana santa, como todas, pero esta en especial por estar fuera de Spain, me ha resultado muy agradable. Llegue el sábado anterior con un vuelo a Valladolid, donde pasé el día con mi hermano, mi madre y mi abuelo. Comimos cerca de la plaza mayor de Valladolid, dimos una vuelta por la ciudad y visitamos la catedral (muy grande, por cierto). Y de allí a CdT, el mejor pueblo del mundo mundial XD.
Desde el sábado hasta el miércoles la cosa fue tranquilita, ya que coincidian los días con las Fallas de Valencia, así que mucha gente estaba allí. Pero bueno, ya estaban por allí algunos de los quintos del 2008 con los típicos nervios de semana santa. Así que hubo que unirse a ellos y pasarlo bien estos días, como no podía ser de otra forma jejeje.
El miércoles ya fue otra cosa, se notó mucho la afluencia de gente y, el comentario más escuchado fue el de… “vaya atasco en la carretera de la coruña” (Sí, todos los que tenemos que salir o atravesar Madrid lo conocemos). Pero en fin, esa noche se empezó a gestar el juntar de hornazo el siguiente día, Jueves Santo, en el rio y así fue, a las 13:30 estabamos todos en la plaza dispuestos para comprar algo y marchar hacia el río. Sin embargo, hubo algunos que nos quedamos esperando a un amigo de Victor, que se perdió dos veces y, se nos hizo tarde y no pudimos bajar al rio. Cosa que no nos importó mucho, ya que nos lo estábamos pasando bien en el Bar de Félix con nuestras herradas de cerveza.
El viernes, más de lo mismo, con un poco más de gente que llegó ese día y con un buen día (algunos se quemaron) nos fuimos al rio de nuevo y si que nos lo pasamos bien en un buen número — Pues yo no recuerdo un hornazo con tanta gente desde que éramos muy muy pequeños. Pero ahí aguantamos también por 3º día una noche larga por los bares del pueblo.
El sábado celebramos nuestro tradicional hornazo con los quintos en la ladera, que grandes ellos. Que, aunque hace ya 4 años que lo fuimos se ha quedado una gran amistad entre nosotros y allí, junto a la chimenea (haciendo humo) estuvimos ya que el día estaba frío, tanto que nevó y tuvimos una pequeña guerra de nieve jeje. Pero bueno ese día hubo un break en el hornazo, ya que algunos nos fuimos aver a los quintos del 8 correr las cintas . Cintas donde hubo un pequeño susto al comienzo debido a que uno de los cajones, cuando los estaban izando se rompió, aunque se pudo reparar a tiempo para que las burras lo corrieran. Una vez estas acabaron, y mientras los quintos hacian la ronda. Volvimos de nuevo a La Ladera a seguir contanto historias y, ahora si ver como la nieve cuajaba en el campo y decir repetidas veces que se podía salir bien con el coche, que el camino era lo único que estaba límpio jeje, sino… :s Pero bueno, después de la nevada volvimos al pueblo a cenar y darnos una ducha para exprimir la última noche, para mi en tierras españolas, para otros en tierras salmantinas. Para el domingo volver de nuevo a “lovely Ipswich”, donde volví a drede un día antes (aquí el lunes es fiesta) para descansar todo lo que pude y más, ya que las semanas santas en Cespedosa no son precisamente tranquilas. =;)+<
Fosdem 2008
La semana pasada se volvió a celebrar en Bruselas de nuevo, el encuentro anual de desarrolladores europeos de software libre. Esto que suena muy serio no lo es tanto cuando dices el nombre que tiene FOSDEM. Se trata de un encuentro anual en la universidad de Bruselas donde se tratan y muestran muchos temas relacionados con el software libre.
Como todos los años, LibreSoft ha organizado la sala de investigación de dicho encuentro, en donde se han hablado de los proyects que tenemos en curso en el grupo más presentaciones de algunos papers de investigadores europeos.
Pero no solo vamos a hablar de “trabajo” sino que la noche de bruselas también da mucho juego por mucho aunque alguno diga que no. Y allí estaba ella Lish, medio belga medio sueca. Rubia, como no, y estudiante de High School, era eso no Teo? Y ya nos marcó desde el viernes, aunque no la vimos el sábado, por desgracia. Pero bueno esa tierra promete mucho mucho, habrá que volver y estarse por allí una temporadilla no? Lo dije con Inglaterra cuando estuve en verano y mira donde estoy. Y otra de las buenas cosas de este viaje es que no volví a Inglaterra, sino que volé a España, Madrid, para el F2F meeting de BEinGRID. Proyecto en el que estoy trabajando en BT, pero eso para otra entrada.
Viaje inminente a Ipswich (UK)
Como ya sabeis gracias a un nuevo proyecto que ha salido en el grupo de investigación en el que trabajo desde hace 1 año, LiubreSoft, nos propusieron que uno de nosotros podría ir a la sede de investigación de la British Telecom en Ipswich a desarrollar parte del trabajo allí.
En concreto me iría para 6 meses, desde este mes de octubre hasta marzo, ambos inclusive. Pues bien, hace un par de días recibí el contrato, y únicamente estoy a falta de saber dónde viviré para que irme ya para allá. Espero que a lo largo del día esto se quede finiquitado y tan pronto como sea posible comprar el vuelo y salir para allá.
¿Qué haré en estos meses? Sobre todo temas de desarrollo de servicios web en java para ofrecer una interfaz de este tipo para una palataforma de juegos. Cosa que me gusta y me interesa bastante. A parte de eso, quiero aprender y mejorar más mi nivel de inglés, ya que en 6 meses da tiempo a hacerlo y visitar a mis amigos que estan por allí al centro/norte de Inglaterra.

Desde el día 8 por la mañana, día en el que me hice un esguince de segundo grado en mi tobillo derecho tube que dejar de practicar el deporte que normalmente hago, el atletismo. Había empezado ya a entrenar para la nueva temporada, pero esta lesión me truncó el comienzo. Y después de algunas dolorosas sesiones de fisioterapia y ejercicios de rehabilitación (algunos hay que seguir haciendolos) hoy he vuelto a correr unos 45 minutos sin tobillera y sin que mi tobillo se resienta. Con lo que ya comenzaré con mi ritmo habitual de entrenamiento ya que este año es correr la maratón, en concreto la maratón de Barcelona (si estoy aquí, claro).
Así que hoy ha sido un día muy bueno y feliz para mí porque ya puedo volver a hacer mi vida normal, objetivo que tenía que cumplir antes de irme (esto lo cuento en otro post).
